Mid-Back & Ribs
Intercostal Neuralgia
Also called: Rib nerve pain
Irritation of a nerve running between two ribs, producing a band of burning, shooting, or electric pain wrapping from the back around the chest wall. Causes include rib joint dysfunction, viral irritation (including shingles — check for rash), post-surgical changes, or muscle entrapment.
Common signs
- Band-like burning or shooting pain wrapping around one side of the chest
- Pain with deep breath, cough, or twisting
- Skin in the band may feel sensitive or numb
- A tender spot near the spine that reproduces the wrap-around pain
Seek help now if
- A blistering rash in the band — shingles needs prompt medical treatment (antivirals work best early)
- Chest pain with cardiac features
- Fever, trauma, or unexplained weight loss
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Check the skin along the band daily for several days — shingles pain can precede its rash
- If mechanical, treatment targets the rib and spine segments feeding the nerve
- Avoid provocative twisting/loading briefly while care begins
The longer road
- Persistent neuralgia benefits from layered care: joint treatment, nerve-calming strategies, breathing retraining
- Post-shingles nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) is co-managed medically; natural support continues alongside
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic care for costovertebral and thoracic segments
- Gentle soft tissue work along the intercostal space
- Attended e-stim and PEMF
- B-vitamin and omega-3 nerve support
About imaging
Clinical in most cases; imaging when trauma or red flags are present.
Daily self-care
- Easy full breathing practice — guarding worsens it
- Heat along the band
- Sleep on the unaffected side with pillow support
