Mid-Back & Ribs
Rib Joint Dysfunction
Also called: Costovertebral joint sprain, 'rib out'
Irritation or restriction where a rib meets the spine or sternum. Produces sharp, well-localized pain that catches with deep breaths, twisting, or lying on that side — often alarming because it can mimic heart or lung problems, but mechanically reproducible on exam.
Common signs
- Sharp, pinpoint pain beside the spine or breastbone
- Catching pain with deep breath, cough, or sneeze
- Pain with twisting or reaching
- Tender spot directly over one rib joint
Seek help now if
- Chest pain with exertion, pressure quality, shortness of breath, sweating — cardiac evaluation first
- Rib pain after significant trauma (fracture risk)
- Fever with chest pain, or pain with coughing up blood
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- If there is any question of heart or lung involvement, that gets ruled out first — mechanical rib pain is a diagnosis made after safety is established
- Once confirmed as mechanical, early joint treatment usually relieves it quickly
- Avoid breath-holding and bracing; keep breathing full and easy
The longer road
- Recurring rib dysfunction points to thoracic stiffness, rowing/lifting technique, or sleeping position — address the driver
- Persistent chest wall pain despite care warrants re-examination and broader differential
Natural healing options we use
- Specific chiropractic adjusting of the rib and adjacent spine
- Soft tissue therapy for intercostal and paraspinal muscles
- Attended e-stim
- Breathing mechanics retraining
About imaging
X-rays after trauma to exclude fracture; otherwise usually clinical.
Daily self-care
- Gentle deep-breathing practice several times daily
- Side-lying foam roller openers
- Modify lifting technique during recovery
