Shoulder
Shoulder Osteoarthritis
Also called: Glenohumeral arthritis
Wear of the shoulder's ball-and-socket cartilage — less common than hip/knee arthritis, often following old injuries, instability, or heavy lifetime use. Presents as deep ache with progressive stiffness, and responds to strength and mobility care longer than most people expect.
Common signs
- Deep shoulder ache with use and weather shifts
- Progressive stiffness, especially rotation
- Grinding or catching sensations
- Night ache after heavy-use days
Seek help now if
- Hot swollen joint with fever
- Rapid destruction pattern (quickly progressive severe symptoms)
- History of cancer with new deep pain
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- X-rays stage it; exam maps which motions and strengths remain workable
- Begin a mobility-and-strength program matched to the stage — function often improves markedly even as X-rays stay the same
- Modify load patterns (angles, volumes) rather than abandoning training
The longer road
- The long plan mirrors other joints: strength maintenance, range preservation, flare protocol, activity design
- Escalation (injections; eventually replacement in advanced, function-limited cases) is function-driven — and shoulder replacement outcomes are excellent when the time truly comes
- Keep the scapular system strong forever; it shares the workload
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic and manual therapy for shoulder-girdle and thoracic mechanics
- Progressive strengthening within comfortable arcs
- PEMF for joint support; attended e-stim
- Anti-inflammatory nutrition; collagen, omega-3, vitamin D
About imaging
X-rays stage it; advanced imaging when surgical planning begins.
Daily self-care
- Daily range work in pain-tolerable arcs
- Strength train the shoulder girdle 2–3× weekly
- Heat before activity, ice after big days as needed
