Elbow, Wrist & Hand
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Also called: Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow
Compression or irritation of the ulnar nerve where it passes behind the inner elbow (the 'funny bone') — from prolonged elbow flexion (phones, sleeping curled), leaning on elbows, or local anatomy. The second-most-common nerve entrapment after carpal tunnel, and very habit-responsive early.
Common signs
- Tingling/numbness in the ring and little fingers
- Worse with bent-elbow positions: phone calls, sleep, driving
- Aching at the inner elbow
- Later: weak grip and pinch, clumsiness with fine tasks
Seek help now if
- Visible wasting of hand muscles (between thumb and index, or the hand's edge) — advanced compression, prompt evaluation
- Rapidly progressive weakness
- Symptoms in a stocking-glove pattern both sides (systemic neuropathy workup)
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Break the flexion habit tonight: a towel splint or soft brace keeping the elbow straighter during sleep is the classic first move
- Stop leaning on the inner elbow; headset instead of held phone
- Begin gentle ulnar nerve glides — gentle is the operative word
The longer road
- Consistent decompression habits + nerve mobility resolve most early cases over weeks to months
- Track fine-motor function and grip; objective decline escalates the workup (electrodiagnostics)
- Progressive or advanced cases: surgical decompression exists and works — earlier is better than after wasting
Natural healing options we use
- Habit and ergonomic overhaul (the first-line treatment)
- Gentle neural mobilization program
- Manual therapy along the nerve's course; chiropractic care for neck and upper-limb mechanics
- B-vitamins and omega-3 nerve support
About imaging
Electrodiagnostics (NCS/EMG) grade it when persistent or progressive; imaging for structural suspicion.
Daily self-care
- Keep the elbow straighter during sleep, every night
- Elbow pads if desk-leaning is unavoidable
- Weekly self-check: cross fingers, spread fingers, pinch strength
