Wrist Sprain
Also called: Ligament injury of the wrist
Ligament injury from a fall on the outstretched hand or forced twist. The wrist's small-bone architecture hides consequential injuries — a 'sprain' that stays painful deserves suspicion, because scaphoid fractures and key ligament tears masquerade as sprains and punish delayed diagnosis.
Common signs
- Wrist pain and swelling after a fall or twist
- Pain with weight-bearing on the hand (push-ups, pushing up from a chair)
- Reduced grip strength
- Bruising in larger injuries
Seek help now if
- Tenderness in the 'anatomical snuffbox' (base of thumb-side wrist) after a fall — scaphoid fracture until proven otherwise, even with normal first X-rays
- A clunk or gap sensation with wrist movement (key ligament tear)
- Deformity, numbness, or vascular change
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Get examined after any real fall — the exam targets the structures X-rays miss early
- Snuffbox tenderness: immobilize and re-image in 10–14 days even if initial films are clean (standard of care)
- Uncomplicated sprains: brief support, early motion, progressive loading
The longer road
- Progress grip and weight-bearing tolerance gradually (wall push-ups before floor)
- A wrist still painful at 4–6 weeks is not 'just a sprain' until advanced imaging says so
- Confirmed ligament instabilities get hand-specialist input early — timing affects options
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic and manual care for carpal and forearm mechanics
- Progressive loading and grip program
- Attended e-stim and PEMF
- Collagen and protein support for ligament healing
About imaging
X-rays first; repeat scaphoid views or MRI when suspicion persists — the wrist earns its second look.
Daily self-care
- Respect the snuffbox rule — re-check, don't assume
- Graded return to hand weight-bearing
- Grip strengthening through recovery
