Growing Pains

Also called: Aching legs in children at night

The classic childhood story: a 4-to-10-year-old who played hard all day wakes crying with aching shins, calves, or thighs — in BOTH legs — and is completely fine by morning, sprinting at recess. Growing pains are real, common (up to a third of children), harmless, and outgrown. The parent's job is comfort — and knowing the short list of signs that mean it's something else.
