Low Back & Pelvis
Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease
Also called: Disc thinning, spondylosis
Age- and load-related thinning and drying of the lumbar discs with associated joint changes. Near-universal on imaging with age and frequently painless — so the working question is never 'do I have degeneration?' but 'is this finding actually driving my symptoms, and what can this spine still do?' Usually: a lot.
Common signs
- Chronic, fluctuating low back ache
- Stiffness after sitting or on waking, easing with movement
- Flare-ups after unusual loads
- Pain centered in the back, sometimes referring to buttocks
Seek help now if
- New leg neurological symptoms
- Night pain with systemic symptoms
- New pain with osteoporosis or after trauma
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Reframe: degeneration is a state, not a sentence — pain levels track with strength, mobility, sleep, and load management far more than with X-ray grade
- Exam identifies the treatable components: stiff segments, weak endurance, poor hinge mechanics
- Start walking daily as base medicine
The longer road
- The long game: progressive strength training (the single best intervention), mobility maintenance, flare-up plan, weight and inflammation management
- Monitor for stenosis-pattern symptoms with age; that shifts the exercise emphasis
Natural healing options we use
- Chiropractic care to maintain segmental motion
- Flexion-distraction for disc-space mechanics
- PEMF support
- Structured resistance training and walking program
- Collagen, vitamin D/K2, omega-3, hydration protocol
About imaging
X-rays grade the changes when useful for planning; MRI only when nerve symptoms or red flags appear.
Daily self-care
- Daily walk, non-negotiable
- Strength train 2–3× weekly, progressively
- Treat sleep and hydration as part of the prescription
