Neck & Head
Text Neck & Loss of the Neck Curve
Also called: Forward head posture, straight neck, military neck
Your head weighs 10–12 pounds balanced upright — but tilted 45 degrees over a phone, the load on your neck approaches 50 pounds, hour after hour. Over time the neck's natural forward curve flattens or even reverses, and X-rays start using words like 'straightening' or 'military neck.' This is a structural pattern, not just a habit — and structural patterns can be measured, corrected, and rebuilt with the right care.
Common signs
- Neck ache and shoulder-top tightness that builds through screen time
- Headaches at the skull base by afternoon
- Head visibly forward of the shoulders in side-view photos
- An X-ray report mentioning 'straightening,' 'loss of lordosis,' or 'reversal of the cervical curve'
- Upper back fatigue, sometimes tingling into the arms with long sessions
Seek help now if
- Curve loss after trauma with significant pain (get properly imaged and examined)
- Progressive arm numbness, weakness, or clumsiness
- Curve changes in a child with pain or systemic symptoms
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Get the curve measured — a standing lateral X-ray with real measurements tells you exactly where your neck is and gives a baseline to correct against
- Raise every screen you own: phone to eye level, monitor top at eyebrow height, laptop on a stand with external keyboard
- Start the counter-pattern daily: chin retractions, thoracic extension, doorway pec stretches — minutes per day, done consistently
The longer road
- Curve correction is a legitimate clinical project: structural chiropractic methods (this is exactly what Chiropractic BioPhysics-style care measures and rebuilds) combine adjustments, specific traction, and mirror-image exercise over months, with re-X-ray to verify actual change
- The curve took years to flatten; honest correction programs run 3–12 months with objective checkpoints
- Once restored, maintenance is habits + periodic care — the phone isn't going away, so the counter-pattern can't either
Natural healing options we use
- Structural corrective chiropractic care with radiographic measurement and re-measurement
- Cervical extension traction protocols
- Postural and deep-neck-flexor strengthening program
- Workstation and phone-habit redesign
- Manual therapy for the adaptively shortened front-of-neck and chest tissues
About imaging
A standing lateral cervical X-ray with measurements is the whole point here — you can't correct what you haven't measured, and re-imaging proves the change.
Daily self-care
- Phone at eye level as a permanent rule
- Chin retractions at every red light / elevator wait
- A monthly side-view photo — watch your own progress
