Neck & Head
TMJ Dysfunction (Temporomandibular Disorder)
Also called: Jaw joint pain, TMD
Pain and dysfunction of the jaw joint and its muscles — from clenching, grinding, stress, disc displacement within the joint, or bite and posture issues. The jaw and upper neck function as one system, which is why neck care is often part of the answer.
Common signs
- Jaw pain or fatigue, worse with chewing
- Clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
- Limited mouth opening
- Ear pain or fullness without infection; temple headaches
- Morning jaw soreness (night grinding)
Seek help now if
- Jaw locked open or closed and unable to move
- Trauma with suspected fracture
- Swelling with fever
- Unexplained numbness of the face
If any of these is sudden or severe, call 911 or go to an emergency room. For the others, get examined before you start self-care.
What to do first
- Switch to a softer diet temporarily; cut gum, ice-chewing, and nail-biting
- Notice daytime clenching — teeth should touch only when swallowing ('lips together, teeth apart')
- Heat to the jaw muscles; gentle opening exercises within comfort
- Get examined: joint, muscles, neck, and habits each need assessment
The longer road
- Chronic TMD care combines jaw muscle therapy, joint mobilization, upper cervical care, and habit retraining
- A dentist-made night guard helps grinders — coordinate care rather than choosing one lane
- Stress physiology drives clenching; downregulation practices are treatment, not fluff
Natural healing options we use
- Intraoral and external manual therapy for jaw muscles
- TMJ and upper cervical chiropractic care
- Attended e-stim for muscle hyperactivity
- Breathwork and stress regulation
- Magnesium support for muscle tension
About imaging
Not needed initially for most. MRI evaluates the joint disc if locking persists; imaging also enters after trauma.
Daily self-care
- Tongue on the roof of the mouth, teeth apart, as your resting default
- Soft-food periods during flares
- Daily controlled opening exercises as instructed
